Path Selection

The path selection algorithm is used to select a single best path for a prefix. The following shows an ordered list of decisions for which route to use, based on Cisco routers:

  1. Longest prefix match (before path selection).
  2. Resolvable next-hop address (hidden).
  3. Highest weight (Cisco).
  4. Highest local pref.
  5. Locally originated (“network” or “aggregate” command).
  6. Shortest AS path.
  7. Lowest origin (IGP then EGP then other).
  8. Lowest MED (typically ignored).
  9. eBGP over iBGP.
  10. Lowest IGP metric.
  11. Lowest BGP router ID.
